ifs internationale filmschule köln is currently inviting applications for a two-year Master’s program in Serial Storytelling, starting in September 2013 in Cologne, Germany.

The School
Established in 2000, ifs internationale filmschule köln is consistently ranked as one of the best film schools in Germany, based on its outstanding student support, extensive technical resources, and active festival participation.

In cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Cologne, the ifs offers Bachelor’s degrees in Screenwriting, Directing, Creative Producing, Cinematography, Editing Picture & Sound, and Visual Arts, and is currently developing several new Master’s programs. In addition, twelve further education programs provide training in a wide variety of disciplines, ranging from Production Design to Interactive Media.

The school is a member of CILECT, the International Association of Film and Television Schools, and cultivates partnerships with a global network of film schools and universities.

The MA in Serial Storytelling at ifs internationale filmschule köln is the first master’s program in Germany to focus exclusively on writing for TV series and other serial formats. It provides writers with a deeper understanding of what makes a successful series, and encourages them to actively participate in pushing the boundaries of the format.

As a starting point, students learn to analyze aspects of dramaturgy, collaboration, and production in existing formats. They then use these tools to develop innovative serial concepts of their own. Taking its cue from the writers’ rooma unique form of teamwork that combines efficiency and creative collaboration—the course will allow students and lecturers to explore and experiment with narrative. At the same time, there will be a strong focus on structured teamwork, and subjects such as financing, producing, and distribution will receive in-depth consideration as well.

During the two-year program, leading series writers, producers, and commissioning editors will share their experiences, while highly acclaimed screenwriting teachers will provide theoretical input and dramaturgical support. Lecturers include Frank Spotnitz (Hunted, The X-Files), Jane Espenson (Game of Thrones, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Dominik Graf (In Face of the Crime), Laurie Hutzler, Phil Parker, Tom Abrams, Tom Schlesinger, and Keith Cunningham.

Teaching will be in English. Students can choose whether to write their screenplays in English or German.
