The San Francisco Art Institute invites applications for the following academic leadership and tenure-track faculty positions:
Chair–Film Department
Position to start in Fall 2013
Seeking a film and video practitioner/ theorist for conceptual and strategic leadership in a fine arts-based film program. The Film department at SFAI has been widely recognized as the leading exponent of diverse genres of filmmaking and has been one of the world’s cradles of experimental filmmaking. Currently, SFAI has the challenge and opportunity of remaking the film program for a new era.
Core teaching responsibilities include introductory through advanced courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates are required to participate in leadership roles, curricular development, and work across the studio departments and interdisciplinary programs.
Candidates must hold an MFA or demonstrate equivalent experience and accomplishment as an artist and/or scholar of the moving image, and a strong track record of teaching and research at the university level. Significant experience in the practice, history, and theory of film, video, and new media are desirable. Appointment at Associate or Full Professor based on qualifications.
Assistant Professor of History and Theory of Contemporary Art
Tenure-track position to start in Fall 2013
Seeking a professional scholar with a specialization in contemporary art and theory. Candidates should have an understanding of recent developments in contemporary art with a global perspective, and a strong track record in publishing and teaching.
Candidates are required to teach in the undergraduate and graduate levels, and are expected to participate in leadership roles, curricular development, and work across departmental and interdisciplinary programs.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent record of scholarly achievement. Candidates should have an active professional practice and be recognized in their field for their scholarly work; exhibit potential for directing/overseeing teaching, research, and graduate study; have proven ability and willingness to participate in institutional affairs; and demonstrate significant experience in the teaching of contemporary art, especially within programs serving both fine artists and scholars.
