The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (SMFA), one of the oldest and most prestigious art schools in the country, is seeking an innovative leader as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the School. Reporting directly to the President, the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean is a member of the School’s senior management team and provides oversight for the management, planning and coordination of the office of Academic Affairs.

The Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the School is responsible for articulating the long-term vision and strategic plan in guiding the development of the School into a model and leader for excellence in education and the arts. S/He will lead major institutional reporting and planning, including curricular innovation, regional and national accreditation, facilities and technology and play a key role in developing and fostering positive relationships between the School and its various constituencies.

Other essential functions of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the School include:

– Managing the academic organizational structure of SMFA and articulating the roles and responsibilities of the major academic leaders and all faculty within that structure.
– Determining budget priorities and developing an annual budget for SMFA in consultation with the President, Senior Finance Officer, Vice President for Enrollment and Vice President for Development and External Affairs.
– Developing the resources necessary to realize the aspirations of the School and participating directly in fundraising initiatives.
– Stewarding a culture of diversity to include teaching, learning, service and scholarship as expressions of that commitment.

Qualifications

Ph.D. or other terminal degree with a record of accomplishment in both education and the arts; experience in operational leadership and management of a complex academic organization; demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, fairness and service; demonstrated leadership fostering excellence in teaching, scholarship and creative work; experience with strategic planning, budgeting, personnel and fundraising; experience developing and overseeing programs that increase student success and overall enrollment; experience in developing partnerships between a college and other institutions.

Founded in 1876, SMFA is one of the few art schools affiliated with a major museum: the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. With an operating budget of over 20 million USD, SMFA enrolls approximately 1,375 full- and part-time undergraduate, graduate and non-matriculated students from 34 countries and 43 states. SMFA alumni from every period are synonymous with contemporary art:  Allen Rohan Crite, Will Barnet, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Scarry, Cy Twombly, Joan Jonas, Ellen Gallagher, David Lynch, Nan Goldin, Omer Fast and Mike and Doug Starn.

The mission of the School is to provide an education in the fine arts—for undergraduate and graduate artists—that is interdisciplinary and self-directed. This education values cultural, artistic and intellectual diversity; it embraces a wide range of media; it stresses the development of individual vision and its relation to culture in general; it values equally the knowledge gained by thinking and doing; it is deeply engaged with the world as a whole. If the mission is constant, its practice is always transforming.
