Art Education students can now complete an MA degree in just twelve months through three semesters of full-time study. This revised curriculum meets all state certification requirements. Students participate in the Visionary Art Education for Urban High Schools Program, which brings free art training as well as social justice and critical pedagogy to New York City high school students. Department studio classes combine theory and practice, and include opportunities for intensive summer study in Venice, Italy or New York.
NYU Steinhardt’s Art Therapy MA Program, well known as a pioneer in the field, will expand its international scope with new global courses in Tanzania, North Africa, India, and the Caribbean. Art Therapy students work with those who have experienced the full spectrum of the human condition, from tsunami victims in Thailand to aging populations in New York City. The program continues to develop a support network across the globe for those in need.
These Art Professions programs complement the Studio Art MFA and BFA programs by bringing Visual Arts Administration, Art Education, and Art Therapy into dialogue with studio art practice.
The Studio Art area is accepting applications for a new Advanced Certificate in Studio Art, with classes beginning in Summer 2010. This 12-credit program of study combines cultural theory with intensive studio art practice. Faculty include internationally respected artists and visitors, with studio space in the heart of downtown New York available during summer sessions. The Advanced Certificate provides prospective MFA applicants with additional training in interdisciplinary art and theory as a means of expanding their artistic skills and improving their portfolios, allows international artists to work in New York, and gives art teachers the opportunity to gain additional professional credits.
