Parsons The New School for Design has launched a search for a Dean of the School of Constructed Environments, who will provide academic and administrative leadership for graduate and undergraduate programs in the fields of architecture, interior design, product design and lighting design.

“With the first interior design program in the nation, Parsons has built a strong reputation for its programs in these fields—in particular an emphasis on cross-disciplinary collaboration, connections with New York City, and commitment to socially progressive design and design-build as a teaching tool,” said Parsons Dean Tim Marshall. “The dean of the newly created School of Constructed Environments will have the opportunity to build on these strengths while developing innovative new programs that will set the pace for the future of the field.”

The School of Constructed Environments currently encompasses seven degree programs: a Master of Architecture, Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design (slated to launch in Fall 2009), Master of Fine Arts in Lighting Design, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Architectural Design, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Product Design, and Associates Degree in Interior Design. The Dean will hold the rank of Associate or Full Professor but his/her central responsibility will be to serve as the chief administrator for the School.

The School of Constructed Environments is one of five thematic schools that Parsons has recently created to better facilitate an interdisciplinary approach to design education and provide a more rational and consistent support structure for faculty and students. These also include The School of Art, Media and Technology (Fine Art, Photography, Illustration, Communication Design, and Design and Technology); The School of Fashion (Fashion Design, Fashion Studies, and Fashion Marketing); The School of Design Strategies: Cities, Services, Ecosystems (Foundation, Integrated Design Curriculum, Design & Management, and proposed thematic graduate programs in Sustainability, Urban and Transdisciplinary Design); and The School of Art and Design History and Theory (Art & Design Studies). Each of the five schools will offer a range of degree programs: undergraduate, graduate, and professional (AAS degrees). The new school structure is officially launching in the 2008-09 academic year.
