Call for applications: MPhil/PhD in Art for 2018–19

The Department of Art at Goldsmiths is committed to supporting and developing art research of the highest quality through Fine Art, Curating, Art Writing, and across disciplines.

We consider all elements of the MPhil/PhD to be sites of rigorous experimentation and encourage you to develop your research through processes of making, collaboration, investigation, study, inquiry, trial and error, analysis and speculation.

We offer an environment for research in which practices and ideas are tested and challenged, and in which artists, curators and writers work alongside one another in an atmosphere of formal and conceptual experimentation. Here your work will be placed in dialogue with that of other practitioners, cultural workers, philosophers, sociologists, anthropologists and political scientists within the broader context of Goldsmiths as a leading research university.

Within the overarching programme of MPhil/PhD in Art at Goldsmiths there are three different pathways for undertaking doctoral research, including:

Pathway 1: Thesis by Practice
Pathway 2: Thesis by Practice and Written Dissertation
Pathway 3: Thesis by Written Dissertation

All full-time research students have access to studio space and facilities including eleven specialist research laboratories, ranging from metalwork, casting, print and fabric to physical computing and state-of-the-art AV processing.

Main research activities fall into three intensive clusters, one in each term. These include seminars, skills workshops, and public events. Other program initiatives include seminar series in art practice, writing and philosophy, and installation series.

In addition, there are public-facing research symposia and events with local and international guest speakers who are leading practitioners and theorists. Recent research symposia which are often part of ongoing research projects include “Animate Assembly” on animation (with Esther Leslie and Anke Hennig); “CHOREOGRAPHIC” (with Mårten Spångberg at Goldsmiths, and also at the Research Pavilion during the Venice Biennale, in collaboration with Valand Academy, Gothenburg, and GradCAM, Dublin, and lectures by Jalal Toufic and WJT Mitchell); and a masterclass and lecture by Bracha Lichtenberg Ettinger (hosted by Goldsmiths Centre for Feminist Studies).

Funding
We offer a range of funding options through Department of Art research bursaries and Graduate Trainee Tutorships. Applicants from the UK/EU are eligible to apply for the CHASE Scholarship.
