Detroit Design Festival seeks local, national and international designers for public design installation competition
The fifth annual Detroit Design Festival (DDF): North America’s Festival of Independent Design, is accepting applications from local, national, and international designers for large-scale public design installations through May 27. Submissions should be focused on the theme of “play” and winners will receive a 2,500 USD award to support their projects, which will debut during the 2015 Detroit Design Festival, scheduled for September 22–26.
The DDF team is seeking large-scale outdoor installations that encourage festival attendees of all ages to engage with their playful side. Inspired by Laavu Design’s public swing installation, which debuted during the 2014 Detroit Design Festival, the DDF team seeks to expand the public installation component of the festival and will be selecting up to ten installations to debut in 2015.
DDF is produced by The Detroit Creative Corridor Center, an economic development organization focused on supporting Detroit’s creative industries and putting Detroit on the map as global city of design and innovation.
“Detroit Design Festival 2015 will explore Detroit’s role as a global center of design. Cities of design are cities that are responsive to human needs; and we want Detroit Design Festival 2015 to challenge designers to explore how design can encourage residents to engage with their environment and improve the quality of life for all Detroiters,” says Matthew Clayson, DC3 Executive Director. ”We are launching the public design installation competition to encourage designers, creatives and Detroiters to push the limits and develop experimental bodies of work that explore playful solutions to the socio-economic challenges facing our region.”
DDF is an annual celebration of design and creativity that connects independent designers with new markets and showcases the Detroit aesthetic with the rest of the world. Designers are encouraged to apply to this contest and showcase their work to more than 25,000 attendees at the nations largest and most diverse design experience.
