The mission of Art on the Underground is to provide a world-class programme of contemporary art that enriches the Tube environment and customers’ journey experience; and continues the long-standing tradition that excellent art and design is at the core of London Underground’s identity and services. The programme is delivered by a dedicated team led by the Head of Art on the Underground. Art on the Underground is part of the Customer Strategy team in the Strategy and Service Development Directorate in LU.
Key role accountabilities
The post holder:
–manages a core team as well as additional team members employed when required on a FTC or consultant basis
–has overall responsibility for the artistic and strategic management of Art on the Underground, overseeing the development, planning and implementation of the programme
–shall be responsible for developing existing plans to deliver art and cultural programmes into other TfL modes and across artistic disciplines
–shall progress the setting up and subsequent running of a new funding and associated governance mechanisms for the programme (e.g. a charitable trust) to support and manage TfL’s art and cultural programmes
–shall influence different audiences both internal and external, raising the profile of cultural activities on LU. This includes developing and maintaining positive relations with TfL, GLA, the media, arts organisations, businesses, government boroughs and any other appropriate partners to create mutually beneficial projects
–shall integrate art and cultural projects into the station modifications and refurbishments to leave a legacy for the future
–shall report on and provide guidance to senior management on issues relating to art and culture
Key knowledge, skills and experience:
–Excellent knowledge of contemporary art practice, a wide knowledge of artists’ work and understanding of the public and commercial arts sector and some knowledge of other arts disciplines such as music, literature, poetry and theatre
–Knowledge and experience of how arts and cultural projects are commissioned, co-ordinated and delivered within a business and public-facing environment
–Knowledge of public transport issues in general and the structure of the public transport industry in London
–Excellent influencing and negotiating skills, particularly with senior stakeholders
–Excellent written and verbal communication skills
–Good team management, coaching and people development skills
–Track record of visionary leadership
