Urbane Künste Ruhr takes a new perspective on the Ruhr Area, the city in general, and the possibilities of art. In 2014, the art organization Urbane Künste Ruhr will be realizing its first complete annual program, intensifying work on the regional development using art and culture. Around 20 projects in all areas of art will direct attention towards the entire region, its residents, artists, networks, and cultural institutions.

Numerous large-scale network projects across the entire Cultural Metropolis Ruhr
In 2014, numerous model projects and such of transregional relevance will continue or begin. DAS DETROIT PROJECT in Bochum in cooperation with Schauspielhaus Bochum and the exhibition B1|A40 – Die Schönheit der großen Straße along the highway will enter their core phase in 2014. In collaboration with three Ruhr art museums in Bochum, Marl, and Mülheim, Urbane Künste Ruhr presents the trans-city exhibition gestern die stadt von morgen. Together with Ringlokschuppen Mülheim, four art collectives will give a guided theater tour through the 54. Stadt (54th city). Urbane Künste Ruhr’s contribution to the Ruhrtriennale will be installed at the Landscape Park Duisburg Nord. In the framework of ÜBER WASSER GEHEN – land gewinnen, Der wachsende Steg by artist group Bureau Baubotanik will be introduced this spring in Kamen. With Archipel In√est, Die Entdeckung des grünen Schattens Zollvereins, Canale Grande, Schöne Neue Stadt, Urban Lights Ruhr and TESTSITE STORIES numerous additional network projects achieve public consciousness. The international city art festival 72 HOUR INTERACTIONS in a city in the Ruhr valley will be holding an architectural world championship; see the press release.

In addition, workshops, research, and research projects dealing with art and sustainability and RUHRBANITÄT (“Ruhrbanity”) will be on the program. The findings of current artistic research allow Urbane Künste Ruhr to productively illuminate their own work. Discursive formats like the large-scale Urbane Künste Ruhr Symposium in August 2014 and the regular Urbane Künste Ruhr Salons condense communication among the many people involved.

More detailed information on the relevant projects can be found at www.urbanekuensteruhr.de.

Katja Aßmann, Artistic Director Urbane Künste Ruhr: “Our projects reflect the diversity and heterogeneity of the Ruhr Region. With the artists, networks, and art institutions, we seek out new impulses for approaching urban space. For us, an important aspect is including the people in the Ruhr Region, and creating new ideas with them.”

Urbane Künste Ruhr is funded by the Ministry for Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sport, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Regionalverband Ruhr as part of the sustainability agreement for Kulturhaupstadt Europa RUHR.2010.
