Curated by Roc Laseca

Canary Islands Government, in collaboration with TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes and Ayuntamiento de Santa Cruz, is presenting praecipitare [Tenerife], a visiting program that will make possible the first island encounter of Italo-Greek artist Jannis Kounellis with local authors Beatriz Lecuona and Óscar Hernández, along with a sequence of collateral and public events around the island.

These site-specific collaborative encounters, curated by Roc Laseca, mark a comprehensive series of dialogues to encourage the design and formalization of an upcoming tandem exhibition by Kounellis and Lecuona/Hernández to be presented in 2015 as a major US museum project.

According to the curator: “in the frame of re-evaluating the current role of new materialisms, these collaborative encounters seek to enable a critical research on the links and heritages of two art practices based on different biographical materialities.” This multiple episode initiative makes possible, on the other hand and under these theoretical circumstances, an update exam of Arte Povera in contemporary demands as a dialogue process that links local island needs with historical languages.

The series of events works as a catenation of site-specific encounters featuring certain degrees of relationships and formats with artists, scholars, researchers and audiences to foster a versatility to provide unexpected dialogues on the appreciation of new materialisms.

The program will be held in the following locations:

Fine Arts School, University of La Laguna
January 30, 16h

Antimonumental dialogues
A seminar is taking place as an academic approach to the study of antimonument or ‘topological sculpture’ in the frame of new materialisms, introduced by a cross-conversation with professors Dr. Drago Díaz, Dra. Lourdes Florido, Dr. Ramón Salas, and curator Dr. Roc Laseca. The event is devoted to curricular purposes, though free and open to public.

Studying praecipitare
Along with Canary Islands artists Lecuona/Hernández, Jannis Kounellis is developing an atelier time that functions as a visual essay for the coming project to be presented next year. The island visit of the Italo-Greek artist will be, as well, the preliminary study for his first US museum major exhibition since the 1980s.

TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes
February 6, 20h

Conversation & precipitation
Devoted to the engagement with local specificities, Jannis Kounellis is presenting a public and free conversation with Roc Laseca at the auditorium of TEA Tenerife Espacio de Las Artes, introduced by a lecture of Dr. Ramón Salas on the pertinence of new critical materialism analysis and the current role of tandem exhibition models in the contemporary scenario.

Centro de Arte Los Lavaderos
February 7, 11h
