Art in America‘s December issue launches our 100th anniversary celebration, continuing throughout 2013. As part of the centenary, we’ve dug into the magazine’s archive to revisit key articles from years past. In December, we present Lucy Lippard’s landmark 1976 piece, “The Pains and Pleasures of Rebirth: Women’s Body Art.” We also asked 16 contemporary artists to respond to an updated version of Irving Sandler and Barbara Rose‘s 1967 survey about the sensibility of the times. In addition, former A.i.A. editor-in-chief Elizabeth C. Baker shares some of her personal insights, photos and reminiscences of the magazine in the 1970s.
Other features include a portfolio by Polish artist Goshka Macuga, an exploration of Los Angeles’s resurgent ceramic art scene, a studio visit with Ann Hamilton and an assessment of two retrospectives: Frank Stella at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Germany, and Deborah Kass at the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh. Our departments include Daniel Hernandez’s first “Atlas” column from Mexico City, a review of Amy Goldin: Art in a Hairshirt, Art Criticism 1964-1978, and a close look at the challenges faced by young artists in Hong Kong, courtesy of A.i.A. senior editor Richard Vine. Our exhibition reviews section comprises 24 reviews from 13 cities around the world.
Art in America readers will also notice some big changes in the magazine’s appearance this month. Our vibrant redesign includes a new, wider format and a refurbished Art in America logo. Consulting with our in-house art department, graphic designer Brendan Dugan and his team (An Art Service, New York) have developed an exciting new look for A.i.A.
For December, there are three different covers by Richard Prince, with colorful, action-packed images from his new series of “cowboy” paintings. These are the first in a series of exclusive cover designs that A.i.A. has commissioned from some of today’s top artists to mark the magazine’s anniversary.
