Mw [Moment Magnitude], currently on view at the Frye Art Museum Seattle, is a cross-platform project of visual art, performance, production, rehearsal, specially commissioned artworks, music, dance, literary events, design, and arts engagement programs showcasing exceptional artistic practice in Seattle. Conceived by a curatorial collective of artists, musicians, writers and curators—Jo-Anne Birnie Danzker, Joshua Kohl, Ryan Mitchell, Doug Nufer, and Yoko Ott—Mw [Moment Magnitude] takes its name from the scale used by seismologists to measure the size of earthquakes in terms of energy released and work produced.
Artists participating in Mw [Moment Magnitude] are Leo Saul Berk, Jherek Bischoff, The Black Constellation (Shabazz Palaces, THEESatisfaction, Maikoiyo Alley-Barnes), Samantha Boshnack, Rebecca Brown, Matt Browning, Cris Bruch, Jason Conger / The Four Hoarse Men / Interrupture / Kjell Hansen, Anne Fenton, Evan Flory-Barnes, Wynne Greenwood, Tad Hirsch, Eyvind Kang, Robb Kunz, LILIENTHAL | ZAMORA, Jeffry Mitchell, Charles Mudede, The People’s Grand Opera, Perfume Genius, Charlie Schuck, Buster Simpson, Vis-à-Vis Society, and zoe | juniper.
“Mw [Moment Magnitude] has no limiting paradigm,” collective member Jo-Anne Birnie Danzker explains. “It is an experiment, an experiment in uncertain outcomes and in creativity under conditions of extreme constraint. It relinquishes the idea of an exhibition that does not change, that has a beginning and an end. Instead it embraces the idea of a living exhibition that is in constant transformation. It imagines and makes real a museum that supports the production of art, as well as exhibits it.”
Upcoming in Mw [Moment Magnitude] are three days of public rehearsal with “pop polymath” (The New York Times) composer Jherek Bischoff and a thirty-five-musician orchestra; a sonic and kinetic ritual by The Black Constellation; performances by composer and trumpeter Samantha Boshnack; new compositions by charismatic bassist and composer Evan Flory-Barnes; sonic installations designed by youth in collaboration with the Yesler Community Center; the premiere of new work by noted avant-garde composer Eyvind Kang; a lecture by writer and filmmaker Charles Mudede; concerts and new compositions by The People’s Grand Opera; performances by Vis-à-Vis Society, poets of the everyday; and a four-day-long on-site dance/video rehearsal and production by zoe | juniper.
Newly commissioned artworks by Leo Saul Berk, Rebecca Brown, and The Black Constellation; the graphic musical scores of Eyvind Kang; and objects and paintings by Matt Browning in constant transformation by nature of their materials, are being presented along with original and reconstructed iconic works by leading Seattle artists Cris Bruch, Jeffry Mitchell, and Buster Simpson.
