About Madre Museum
The Museo d’Arte contemporanea DonnaREgina (M.A.D.RE) stands in the historical heart of Naples and owes its name to the building that houses it, the Palazzo Donnaregina, which stands next to the Monastery of S. Maria Donnaregina, founded by the Swabian dynasty (13th century). Renewed by the Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza and developed around an internal courtyard on three different floors, the museum opened to the public on June 10, 2005, inaugurating the site-specific installations on its first-floor. This was followed in December 2005 by the inauguration of the historical collection housed on the second floor and finally, in April 2006, by the opening of the third-floor designed for temporary exhibitions with the major anthological show dedicated to Jannis Kounellis.
The creation of the MADRE museum forms part of a project of cultural revival for the city of Naples which dates back to the 90s with events such as the installations in Piazza del Plebiscito, the stations on the Line 1 subway service (designed by eminent architects and used to present works by leading international artists) and the Annali delle Arti (the annual organization of exhibitions, events and art encounters in the Campania Region) to name a few.
