SCOPE Art Show‘s 6th edition in Basel welcomed over 15,000 visitors to its Kaserne location, further solidifying its reputation as the premier showcase for international, emerging contemporary art and multi-disciplinary creative programming.
SCOPE Basel 2012 featured over 80 international galleries, all of whom enjoyed tremendous exposure and sales. Delighted to welcome its media parter, Artnet, SCOPE Basel 2012 boasted attendance from press and curators alike; several galleries reported interest and sales to public collections and museums such as: 21C Museum in Louisville, Kentucky; The Erasmus Museum of The Netherlands; The Centre Pompidou in Paris; The Bromer Art Collection in Switzerland; The Fundacion Canaria in The Canary Islands; The Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City; and The Kanazawa Museum in Japan; amongst other prestigious institutions.
A newcomer to SCOPE’s Breeder Program, Standing Pine-cube from Japan reported 17 sales, totaling over 300,000 EUR, while amassing a 30-person waiting list for artist Kenji Sugiyama. Breeder Program galleries The Flat: Massimo Carassi of Milan and The Cross of Dublin also reported significant sales to large private collections.
First-time exhibitor Oltre Dimore of Bologna, Italy, exclaims: “The economic moment is not the best, but you don’t feel it here at SCOPE.” Canvas International from Amsterdam reported an acquisition by 21C Museum, while Licht Feld Gallery from Basel placed a large-scale work by artist Sabine Hertig in the Bromer At Collection.
McLoughlin Gallery of San Francisco hailed her first experience at SCOPE as “Phenomenal,” saying, “I have had exceptional exposure for my artists—sales were amazing.” Another SCOPE newcomer, Kaikai Kiki of Japan, placed a work by artist Akitoshi Akamatsu with Mark & Livia Straus of the Hudson Valley Center of Contemporary Art in New York, while The Fundacion Canaria acquired a work by Sarah Alexander from Galerie Hirschmann of Berlin.
Reporting substantial sales to new collectors, Waterhouse & Dodd Gallery contends, “The average price for works we’ve sold has been a lot higher than the last two years,” while New York’s De Buck Gallery hailed SCOPE Basel 2012 as “The best SCOPE ever.”
Also celebrating incredible sales: Wanrooij Gallery of The Netherlands, La Lanta Fine Art of Bangkok, and Robert Fontaine Gallery of Miami, who also reported a waiting list for artist Troy Abbott.
The winner of the SCOPE Foundation Award for Basel 2012, Galerie Maurits van de Laar of The Netherlands, looks forward to receiving 100 square feet of exhibition space in SCOPE Miami 2012, taking place December 4–9 at its new location on the most highly-trafficked gateway to the Midtown Arts District. Located at NE 36th St and Midtown Blvd., SCOPE Miami‘s monumental 100,000 sq. ft. pavilion will house its most ambitious fair to date, featuring a selection of 20 innovative Breeder Program galleries presented alongside 85 established international exhibitors.
