The UnionDocs Collaborative Studio (CoLAB) is a one-year program for a select group of 12 emerging media artists from the US and abroad. Based in one of NYC’s most exciting neighborhoods, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, CoLAB offers a platform for exploring contemporary approaches to the documentary arts and a process for developing a collaborative project. Key benefits include:

- Regular master classes with visiting artists and industry experts.
- A structured environment for research and experimentation.
- Mentoring and critique on the production of original work.
- Weekly seminars, screenings, and other public programs at UnionDocs.
- Exhibition opportunities for the year’s collaborative project.

In a recent article in The New York Times, film scholar Scott MacDonald remarked, “UnionDocs has a healthy sense that the older definitions of what constitutes ‘experimental’ cinema and what constitutes ‘documentary’ are up for grabs.” Thus, CoLAB represents a new and alternative fellowship model, offering affordable residency and visa support for six participants coming from abroad and an equal number of spots for local participants. The fees for the program are intended to be as low as possible, and while participants are asked to make the UDC their primary creative focus, the schedule does accommodate full-time or freelance work. Rather than applying with a project proposal or rough cut, all participants are selected on the basis of previous work and develop new proposals through the program.

The UnionDocs CoLAB has presented original work at premier venues such as MoMA’s Documentary Fortnight; the Harvard Film Archive; the Visible Evidence Conference; Camden International Film Festival; Hot Docs; The Volksbühne, Berlin; and other venues. The Brooklyn Rail summed it up with the title of their feature article: “UnionDocs Brings Auteurs Together.”

UnionDocs is a Center for Documentary Art that generates and shares big ideas. We bring together a diverse community of experimental media-makers, dedicated journalists, critical thinkers, and local partners on a search for urgent expressions of the human experience, practical perspectives on the world today, and compelling visions for the future.
