Güneş Terkol liberates the practice of sewing from domestic and conventional connotations and re-charges sewing with new possible meanings, methodologies and productions.
NON will be hosting Güneş Terkol’s fourth solo show on view 10 February–17 March 2012 in Misir Apartmani. Entitled “The Main Forces That Stir Up Action”, the exhibition will present Terkol’s most recent works along with pieces produced during artist residencies at Gasworks, London and Organhaus, Chongqing.
Along with gender issues, Terkol is interested in visually representing labor and common and/or alternative modes of production. The Main Forces That Stir Up Action will include Terkol’s sewings on fabric and video installations, as well as silkscreen works—a medium that the artist has recently adopted. Three textile banners that Terkol produced collectively with women during workshops in Antakya, Istanbul and Chongqing, will be exhibited together for the first time in addition to a documentation table, with a complete archive of the production process. Terkol usually sews her figures on monochromatic fabric backgrounds, which don’t convey a direct sense of space nor time. Depicted in a composition bearing an unconventional perspective, these two-dimensional figures may seem to be familiar at first sight. However, the figures constitute variable identities detached from their original contexts. On the other hand, the fabric and silkscreen printing techniques add new layers to the transience and fluidity of the artist’s compositions while transforming her paintings into powerful images that encourage the viewer to take action.
About Güneş Terkol
Terkol takes inspiration from her immediate surroundings, collecting materials and stories, which she weaves into her sewing pieces, videos, sketches and musical compositions. The protagonists of her narratives, humorously represented by Terkol in her work, are usually women adapting or refusing to adapt to the social and cultural transformations that affect contemporary Turkey. The act of sewing and using recycled fabrics becomes, in itself, an act of resistance which claims back a form of independent production.
Güneş Terkol’s recent group exhibitions include “Dream and Reality” (Istanbul Modern, 2011); “Destroy Istanbul” (Galerie Neurotitan, Berlin, 2011); “If the nature is heaven; the city is hell” (Cer Modern, Ankara, 2011); “Silence_Storm” (Port Izmir, 2010); “White Out” (Kunsthaus Erfurt, 2010); 2nd International Antakya Biennial (2010); “états d’âmes” (ENSBA, Paris, 2010); “Turkish Delight” (Galerie Mycroft, Paris, 2009), “Unfair Provocation” (Hafriyat, Istanbul, 2009); “Truths and Mirages” (NLA, Sofya, 2008) and “Connect the Dots” (Fargfabriken, Stockholm, 2008).
Among her recent solo shows are “They were trying to climb against the current” (NON, Istanbul, 2010) and “No Ceremony for Transition” (Apartment Project, Istanbul, 2008).
Terkol was a resident at Gasworks International Residency Programme (London, 2010) and at Organhaus Art Space (Chongqing, 2011).
Güneş Terkol is also a member of performance and music collective Ha Za Vu Zu. The collective’s performances and shows include NON-Stage (Istanbul, 2011); “Between Stamp and Mars NO:3″ (SALT, Istanbul, 2011); “When Ideas Become Crime” (Depo, Istanbul, 2010); “For Whom Is It Too Late Today?” (Frac des Pays de la Loire, Carquefou, 2009); X Baltic Triennial of International Art (Vilnius, 2009); 10th Lyon Biennial (2009); Kaserne (Basel, 2008), Mercy (Liverpool, 2008); Rotterdamse Schouwburg (Rotterdam, 2008); Boviza Triennial (Milano, 2008); Lokaal01 (Antwerp, 2008); “Die Letzten Dinge” (Westfalischer Kunstverein, Münster, 2007) and 10th Istanbul Biennial (2007).
