iDANS Contemporary Dance and Performance Festival
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
We are happy to share with you the program of the 5th edition of iDANS Contemporary Dance and Performance Festival. As usual, the festival will encompass diverse expressions of contemporary art, dance, theatre, music and performance art—emphasizing their commonalities in respect to performativity and corporeality—and will take place at multiple venues in Istanbul between 30th of September–23rd of October, 2011. The festival will host some of the most established artists of the field along with fresher experiments. iDANS will continue throughout the season with special projects.
Organized and presented by Bimeras each year around a curatorial approach, the framework of the 2011 edition of iDANS is determined as “At Work”. The festival program includes staged performances, public space interventions, and workshops as well as informal meetings in order to interrogate to what extent each step in realizing a contemporary performing arts work can be considered as a “work” on its own right; how the notion of “immaterial labour” as the presumed predominant mode of production in the current economies is reflected in the conception, implementation and organization of artistic processes; and how artistic labour contributes to and transforms symbolic and economic production.
In contemporary capitalism, we see the emergence of a new type of “worker”. Similar to a dancer, this “new worker” is expected to be endowed with mental and physical mobility, agility, adaptability and playfulness and should continuously be engaged in the production, circulation and distribution of images, ideas, affects, codes, sensations and gestures.
Has the incitement to creativity become an instrument of exploitation in the contemporary organization of production? Given this, what are the potential roles that remain for creativity for the development of human agency and emancipation? iDANS 05 once more brings together in Istanbul some of the most challenging artists from all over the world who in one way or another address these questions, particularly in the field of live arts. Besides the performances on stage and beyond, iDANS also hosts two training and capacity development programs: Europe in Motion (EIM) and Critical Endeavor Turkey.
The EU supported travelling international development program for upcoming choreographers EIM will take place within iDANS between September 30th and October 10th. Next to intensive dialogue sessions between mentors and peers, the participants will have the chance to develop their own work, along with their responses and propositions relevant to the questions and concerns iDANS 05 raises to be presented on October 9th.
Critical Endeavor Turkey grew out of the international performing arts writing and journalism workshop Critical Endeavor that was hosted within the previous edition of iDANS as a joint event of the EU supported network Jardin d’Europe. As an educational program for those specializing in contemporary dance and performing arts journalism, the workshop aims to contribute to the development of a literary culture which confronts the challenges and esponsibilities of critical practices in the field. The program will consists of a series of seminars, panels and discussions and will run between September 23rd–October 23rd. Contributions of the participants can be followed at iDANS Blog.
Please do not forget to check out iDANS website!
