Attraction!
“We know when it starts, we don’t know when it will end…”
From Saturday 11 December 2010

The CENTQUATRE is a unique venue located in the east of Paris, in the lively 19th arrondissement, a densely populated district where half of the residents are under 30 and more than 30 cultural communities live together.

This establishment is housed in a 19th century industrial building with a surface area of 39,000 sqm and dedicated to the creation, production and dissemination of art. Nineteen artists’ studios, two theatres (seating 200 and 400 respectively), adaptable spaces, an area devoted to small children (“La Maison des Petits”), another to amateur artists (“Le Cinq”), and commercial spaces (a bookshop, restaurant, café, etc.) combine to fill this huge artistic complex.

Dedicated to contemporary creativity, the CENTQUATRE invites international artists working in all fields (visual arts, performance, theatre, music, circus, cabaret, fairground rides, dance) to work on site, with the prospect of a period when they will share quality time with the public.

José-Manuel Gonçalvès, the CENTQUATRE’s new director, is marking his arrival with an innovative event, Attraction!, a “declaration of attention” addressed to the public.

After organising original events such as “Temps d’images” or “Week-ends à la ferme” at La Ferme du buisson for many years, José-Manuel Gonçalvès continues his artistic and cultural intuitions at the CENTQUATRE, inspired by who and what he meets.

Attraction! is a different, flexible, inventive form of programming. It announces itself as a movement, a switchover, and operates through the build-up and clustering of diverse works and creators of original contemporary initiatives.

Why Attraction? Because the CENTQUATRE wants to be a place that attracts every kind of audience, and welcomes all the arts in residence and on show, such as the Manège Carré-Sénart of François Delarozière (maker of the Royal de Luxe machines).

Events will be scheduled (almost) every week starting on Thursdays, and will peak on the weekend.

The first event – on 11 and 12 December – will be devoted to the new artists in residence in particular (A.I.M.E. / Julie Nioche, the P.H.P collective, Séverine Chavrier, Cyril Teste / MxM Collective, Radhouane El Meddeb, as well as the L’Amicale de production collective). It will also usher in a series of artistic partnerships, in the specific form of “extensions” with the Théâtre du Rond-Point and performances of La Loi du marcheur (Entretien avec Serge Daney) by Nicolas Bouchaud, and the Théâtre de la Ville with a show by Maguy Marin, Salves, in February 2011.

The second weekend – covering 17, 18 and 19 December – will pay tribute to music of every kind, including concerts of classical music with Radio France and a new form of monthly get-together, the hip hop movement with The Urban Film Festival which will be joined by other regular prime-time events at the CENTQUATRE: acoustic concerts in the form of a music salon with Arthur H, Albin de la Simone and the Dahu Collective, evenings organized by the creative DJ Oof every three months, which will include performances and installations centred on the music.
