THE TELEFONICA FOUNDATION AND MATADERO MADRID PRESENT THE AWARDED ARTWORK OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION VIDA 11.0 ON ART AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
In collaboration with the Art Department of the Municipal Council of Madrid, the Telefónica Foundation presented the awarded works of art of the international competition VIDA 11.0 at Matadero Madrid and once again demonstrated its commitment to contemporary artistic expression based on the application of new technologies.
VIDA 11.0 represents the consolidation of a global pioneer project established to reward works of art developed with digital techniques, strategies, concepts and methods deriving from synthetic life. At the same time, it celebrates the eleventh year of the competition which proves that VIDA has turned to a global reference in the field of art and new media.
This year, the VIDA competition provides three new important novelties:
• The number of prizes awarded has been expanded. In total, 80,000 Euros have been split into two categories: finished projects (three prizes worth 18,000, 14,000 and 8,000 Euros each), and 40,000 Euros to promote Latin American artistic production.
• Intending to give some shape to this emerging category, the Telefónica Foundation created a virtual archive which documents this multi-faceted field of art at www.fundacion.telefonica.com/vida. The VIDA Gallery does not only represent a reference to excellence on an international level, but also constitutes an inestimable resource which documents the evolution of electronic art by granting access to these works to a broader public on the internet.
• The creation of the TELEFONICA FOUNDATION AWARD aims to reward the artistic development characterized by the research of new formats and innovation. Awarding a total amount of 30,000 Euros, this prize also includes an offer to organise an exhibition in the halls of the Telefónica Foundation.
During the last 11 years, projects of 707 artists from more than 30 countries were submitted to the VIDA competition and more than 100 works of art were rewarded. 25 winning pieces were exhibited at ARCO.
During VIDA 11.0, the second biggest number of projects was submitted in the history of the competition: 136 projects from 27 countries with 58 projects from Europe (21 from Spain and 7 from Germany), 74 from the American continent (22 from the US), and 4 from Asia. 33 of a total of 45 projects which were submitted in the category Incentives to Artistic Production, came from Latin American and 12 from Spain.
This year, a great number of works strongly focused on the environment with ecological issues. Other highlights of the current competition are works of art related to social systems, and specifically, to the urban environment.
