Born in rural Sisaket province in 1973, Nim Kruasaeng lives and works in Bangkok and Pattaya. She began painting 11 years ago after meeting the Indonesian artist Murni during a visit to Bali. Sidestepping realism, Nim portrays everyday objects according to her own characteristic imagination and style.
Nim paints mostly on canvas and watercolour paper. She conveys her subject matter by focusing on aspects that stand out in her immediate impression or memory, then transferring the image using honest,
deliberate strokes.
Her works are typically distilled to essential colours, forms or atmosphere. She works with little feeling of constraint or anxiety, painting according to her desires and hopes. As a result, the works are a reflection not just of their subject matter but of her life.
Nim’s key solo exhibitions in Thailand included one at the Land Foundation, Chiang Mai in 2003, and at Hariphunchai National Museum in Lamphun in 2005. Overseas she held a solo show at the Cecille R. Hunt Gallery, University of Webster, Missouri, U.S.A., and took part in a group show “Ignoring Borders” at Kevin Morris Gallery, New York.
Nim’s show at Gallery Ver will include her first-ever exhibition of sculpture, along with recent works on paper. The three sculptures to be presented are a three-dimensional development of the approach she takes
in painting.
The opening reception will also celebrate the launch of a related artist’s book. The 150-page, hardcover volume is a collaborative work that pairs images of Nim’s paintings together with a series of related photographs by artist Rirkrit Tiravanija.
