YVON LAMBERT NEW YORK PRESENTS
SALLA TYKKÄ
February 25 to March 25, 2006
Opening on February 25, 2006
New York, NY, February 7, 2006—Yvon Lambert New York is pleased to announce the first New York exhibition of Finnish artist Salla Tykkä. Tykkä’s work gained international notice at the 2001 Venice Biennale when she presented her highly acclaimed video Lasso (2000). In her new exhibition, she will present Zoo, a 35 mm film comprised of scenes shot at a zoo in Helsinki, Finland, including multiple underwater scenes. The exhibition will be on view from February 25 through March 25, 2006. Yvon Lambert New York is located at 564 West 25th Street, New York, NY 10001, and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am-6 pm.
Salla Tykkä’s work focuses on a young female protagonist who appears to be an extension of the artist herself. Each film explores the emotional state of the protagonist without dialogue and often accompanied by music that shapes the mood of each setting. The films are charged with strong and sometimes disturbing visual metaphors, which develop as the protagonist moves through various scenes and settings, sometimes as an active agent, other times as a passive though emotionally engaged observer.
As Tykkä’s work often lies within a dreamlike moment, the flow of time in her films seems to change and flux with the emotional state of her subjects. Only pieces of the whole picture are shown, leaving the rest of the story for individual reflection. Given the works’ openly ambiguous narrative structure, the viewer is challenged to interpret them in a non-conventional way.
Since 1997, Salla Tykkä’s work has been shown internationally at museums such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and MoMBA in Buenos Aires.
