As part of the rehabilitation work on the Richelieu site of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) located at 58 rue de Richelieu 75002 Paris, OPPIC, as the mandated contracting owner, launched a consultation conducted under a restricted adapted procedure concerning the execution of a work of the “artistic 1%” in application of Decree no. 2016-360, Articles 67-70, of March 25, 2016 relative to public markets, and Decree no. 2002-677 of April 29, 2002, as amended, relative to the obligation to decorate public buildings and specifying the conditions for awarding contracts. This consultation is part of an overall approach of the 1% artistique for the entire Richelieu site, divided into three separate calls for tenders.
The establishment trains future library curators, heritage conservation officials, teachers/researchers, etc. The library of the École is exceptionally developed in the disciplines associated with its fundamental vocation: history and its sources, palaeography, philology… It boasts a specific entrance in the form of a circular hall with a high ceiling, where the piece will be located. It is a public passageway for readers and library staff. This hall was chosen by the establishment and the library to pay tribute to its patrons and donors, in the form of a pre-existing pictorial element mentioning their names. Subsequently, this hall will also be used to host small temporary exhibitions of books and documents from the library’s heritage collections. In the context of a dialogue between the piece and the architecture of the site, the artistic intervention could contribute to magnifying this volume, by making reference to the notion of vestibule, of threshold between spaces, but also between periods and generations of users.
