Turps Studio Programme
A one year studio based programme with the option to apply for a second year on completion of the first.
Turps Studio Programme is a unique opportunity for a selected group of painters to take up residence in their own dedicated studio within an exciting studio and gallery complex in South East London and embark on an academic year long programme of intensive mentoring, dynamic group seminars, talks and lectures from visiting artists and regular Turps painters, culminating in a group exhibition/open studios in London in 2019.
Turps Studio Programme is designed to fulfill a fundamental and broad view of what we believe a solid painting programme requires by creating an environment that parallels the studio practice of an independent artist, within the supportive structure of an intensive mentoring programme. In this studio context we focus on encouraging and reflecting upon the specific qualities an artist brings, and developing a high level of exchange and debate. Participants will be expected to work within this professional environment with commitment and a strong work ethic, as well as participating fully in a community-based studio.
Regular Turps mentoring painters and a wide array of visitors work closely with the group and individuals to maximize opportunities through rigorous investigation of practice and context throughout the programme.
Mentors and visitors over the past five years have included: Marcus Harvey / Phillip Allen / Phil King / Anne Ryan / Clare Price /Dan Coombs / Andrea Medjesi Jones / Anne Ryan / Geraldine Swayne / Neal Tait / Benjamin Senior / Matthew Collings and Emma Biggs / Emma Talbot / Alex Katz / Merlin James / Simon Linke / Andrew Grassie / David Humphrey / Jennifer Coates / Kate Lyddon /Genieve Figgis / Eddie Peake / Nigel Cooke / Lisa Milroy / Katy Moran / Simon Bill / Alison Katz / Milena Dragicevic / Sarah Dwyer / David Rayson / Ansel Krut / Andrew Stahl / Gavin Turk / Jane Harris / Katrina Blannin / and many more.
Turps Correspondence Course
Turps Correspondence Course is an innovative project giving painters a critical perspective and challenging insights into their practice, wherever they are and at any point in their career, in the form of quarterly appraisals aimed at supporting their studio development.
During the year participants will engage in a structured two way process, during which time, they will present works and, in turn, receive feedback from a dedicated mentor as well as the wider tutorial team at Turps Art School.
Applicants must have a personal email address, access to the internet and reasonable facilities to document work digitally.
Participants will be provided with a dedicated online folder at privateviews.com that will be visible to both themselves and the tutorial team. Participants will be expected to upload works, drawings, works in progress, sketchbook pages etc. during the duration of the course. It is important this is an ongoing process that best describes their output as this will allow the mentors to track developments and compile their observations at dedicated feedback points.
The application process is now open and applications will be reviewed on an on-going basis until August 31, 2018, when the process will close until next year. Applicants can expect to hear about the success of their application within four weeks of Turps receiving it.
2017/18 mentors: Marcus Harvey, Phillip Allen, Phil King, Geraldine Swayne, Luke Dowd, Dan Coombs, Phil King, David Leeson, Andrea Medjesi-Jones, Colin Smith, Sofia Silva, Neal Tait, Emma Talbot, Covadonga Valdes.
Turps Art School also offers Turps Surgeries, structured one day crits in small groups led by two Turps Mentors, at Turps Gallery in London.
