The Department of Graphic Design in the Boston University College of Fine Arts School of Visual Arts invites applications for a full-time faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor of Art (Non Tenure Track), with a pathway for promotion and long-term contracts.
The Graphic Design program seeks a candidate with leadership experience in an art or design program and a strong research practice in design or innovative new media practices that intersect with design. The candidate should have five years of college and/or graduate-level teaching experience and demonstrated investment in teaching with a preference given to a track record of leadership and vision in creative work and Graphic Design teaching.
The pedagogy of BU’s Graphic Design program emphasizes experimentation, practicality, and criticality, as well as social and cultural awareness and engagement. The School of Visual Arts Graphic Design MFA and BFA programs seek a faculty member who engages in new schools of thought across traditional graphic design and emerging media. A successful candidate thinks of design broadly and wishes to cultivate cross-disciplinary opportunities across the University that expand the model for design education in a research institution. Responsibilities
Teach across the BFA and MFA Graphic Design programs and interdisciplinary curricula with potential for a leadership role in the Graphic Design MFA and Graduate Certificate programs. Play a faculty leadership role in the School with service at the College and University level.
Actively advance departmental, curricular and extra-curricular engagements, from new course development to cross-disciplinary collaborations.
Maintain an active professional practice that includes research-based work, including publishing and/or public projects/commissions at a national and/or international level.
Qualifications
MFA and 5 years experience teaching at the college or university level, including proven leadership and curricular vision.
Candidate should possess expertise in graphic design across traditional and emerging medias.
Fluency is expected in two to three practice areas, such as Interactive Design, Web Design, Motion Graphics, Drawing into Animation, Graphic Design Theory and History, Advanced Typography, Visual Systems, Information Design, Exhibition Design.
