Independent Curators International (ICI), in collaboration with the Gerencia de Artes Plásticas y Visuales of the Instituto Distrital de las Artes, presents the second Curatorial Intensive in Bogotá, Colombia.

This program marks the fifth iteration of ICI’s Curatorial Intensive in Latin America, following past Intensives in Minas Gerais, Brazil with Inhotim (2012); Buenos Aires, Argentina with MACBA (2013); Bogotá, Colombia with the Gerencia de Artes Plásticas y Visuales of the Instituto Distrital de las Artes (2013); and Mexico City, Mexico with Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo (2014). It will be the fourth program conducted entirely in Spanish, offering Spanish-speaking curators the opportunity to meet colleagues from around the world, share ideas on how to push the parameters of their practice, and build a network for future collaborations. Applicants should be fluent in Spanish, as seminars and discussions will take place primarily in Spanish. Click here for information on the program in Spanish.

The Curatorial Intensive is designed to immerse participants in a rigorous schedule of seminars, conversations, and presentations that support the process of developing an idea for an exhibition or program into a full proposal. The program is targeted toward self-motivated individuals—working independently or in institutions—who would benefit from a week of intensive conversations around the issues and questions that regularly arise for curators.

Seminars, site visits, individual meetings, and roundtable discussions will be led by a group of professionals that includes María del Carmen Carrión (Director of Public Programs & Research, ICI), Rosina Cazali (independent curator, Guatemala City), Gabriela Rangel (Director of Visual Arts and Curator at the Americas Society, New York), Mauricio Marcín (Curator, Museo El Eco, Mexico City), Renaud Proch (Executive Director, ICI), José Roca (Artistic Director, FLORA ars+natura, Bogotá), and Victor Manuel Rodríguez (independent curator and writer, Bogotá), among others.

Application guidelines
12–14 applicants working internationally will be selected to participate in the Curatorial Intensive. The applicant must have 3+ years of curatorial experience. All applications must include a 500-word description of an exhibition or program idea that the applicant would like help in developing. This description should outline the proposal concept and any artists that the applicant is considering. To apply and for full application guidelines, visit ICI’s website. Applications should be submitted in Spanish.

Fees and scholarships
The program fee is 1,900 USD. Participants are also responsible for covering travel and accommodation expenses. A number of scholarship packages that subsidize or eliminate the program fees, accommodation and travel expenses are available and awarded based on merit. In addition, curators of Latin American origin based anywhere in the world, are eligible to apply for the kurimanzutto Scholarship for Latin American curators; this scholarship covers the full program fee as well as travel expenses. There are also scholarships available for Colombian curators who are based outside of Bogotá thanks to the support of the Ministerio de Cultura de Colombia. If you would like to apply for a scholarship, please include a letter of motivation with your application.

About the Curatorial Intensive
The Curatorial Intensive is ICI’s short-term, low-cost training program that offers a group of curators the chance to develop project ideas and make connections with professionals in the field. The Curatorial Intensive takes place annually in New York, and in other locations in conjunction with institutional partners worldwide.

The Curatorial Intensive is made possible in part by a grant from the Hartfield Foundation; and by generous contributions from Toby Devan Lewis, the ICI Board of Trustees, the ICI Gerrit Lansing Education Fund, and the supporters of ICI’s Access Fund.
