Instituto Inhotim opens on 4 September a comprehensive solo exhibition by Geta Brătescu, a new permanent gallery with works by Carroll Dunham as well as large-scale installations by Dominik Lang and David Medalla. Annually changing presentations from the collection as well as introducing especially commissioned works allow for new dialogues with existing permanent and temporary installations at Inhotim. While there has been over the past decade an increasing interest internationally in art from Latin America, it is Inhotim’s mission to also introduce to its audience less known names and different forms of art-making. This year showcasing artists from Eastern Europe, Asia and North America, and exhibitions encompassing a wide range of media, scale and visual language, Inhotim responds to a change in perspective and a decentralized narrative in art history.
Inhotim is opening a new permanent gallery dedicated to North American painter Carroll Dunham (b. 1949, New Haven, USA). Based in New York since the 1970s, the artist has produced works with multiple influences, from Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism to pornography and cartoon. In 2005, after a visit to Inhotim, Dunham was commissioned to create images that would translate the artist’s language into the context of Inhotim. This gave rise to Garden (2008), a cycle of five paintings that will be shown together in an old farmhouse, adapted for their presentation.
Galeria Lago has been restructured to receive works by three artists: Geta Brătescu (b. 1926, Ploiesti, Romania), one of the most important names of the postwar avant-garde in Eastern Europe, holds a wide-scope solo show with works produced between 1975 and 2013 titled O jardim e outros mitos [The Garden and Other Myths]. In her collages, paintings, drawings, prints and experimental films, the artist reflects on artistic practice and the female condition, seeking references in narratives of the ancient classical times.
Dominik Lang (b. 1980, Prague, Czech Republic) presents Sleeping City (2011), using bronze sculptures made by his father, artist Jiří Lang (1927–1996), during the 1950s and ’60s. Presented among structures of iron, wood, glass and fabric, the pieces take on new meanings, wrapped in personal memories and the affective and artistic relation between father and son. The installation was first presented at the 2011 Venice Biennale, occupying the entire Czech pavilion.
In the third section of the gallery, David Medalla (b. 1942, Manila, Philippines) is presenting Cloud-Gates (1965/2013). This work belongs to his series Bubble Machines—kinetic sculptures made of foam and first created by the artist in the 1960s. Driven by a motor, a mixture of water and soap moves up through plastic tubes, creating columns of bubbles in constant mutation.
