Study Fine Art with a focus on Art in Public Spheres at the Master Fine Arts program in Lucerne for the academic years 2020–22.
The Master Fine Arts with the Major Art in Public Spheres (MAPS) at the Lucerne School of Art and Design is a two-year full-time degree course, which is oriented to current discourses and artistic project work. The course examines artistic practices in specific institutional and social contexts, fosters collaboration with diverse communities, and addresses current social and political issues. Most importantly, it allows you to create new responses and solutions in public spheres.
As a MAPS student, you acquire skills in artistic research, in context-specific, collaborative, research-based project work, and in strategic artistic/activist development. In addition to “core modules” (obligatory course content), you can match your degree course to your own particular interests by choosing “optional modules”.
MAPS deals with an exciting range of topics, from interventions in public space to community development and commoning, from co-habitation to prospects for ecological and social urban development, from urban design to participatory art practices, new pedagogy, and artistic mediation.
MAPS also offers:
–plenty of time and space for the further development of your own artistic practices as well as for the collaborative conception and implementation of a final group project
–an overview of current artistic practices and cultural theory, with a specific focus on Art in Public Spheres, and postcolonial and feminist theory
–intensive exchange in small groups
–personal advice and support from an experienced team of lecturers and artist mentors
–studio space, plus access to various labs, workshops, and other excellent university infrastructure
–an introduction to artistic research strategies and the PhD preparation course
–group excursions to relevant European locations and international exhibitions
–input from international guest speakers, e.g. in the context of the Master Dialogue
The Master Art in Public Spheres degree course serves to further develop and professionalise students’ socially committed artistic practices at the interface of art and the public sphere, and so equips students to initiate, design and realise interdisciplinary projects in a broad variety of social fields. More generally, the MAPS degree is valuable proof of a graduate’s ability to apply creative methods of working and thinking and artistic mediation skills, whatever their task or role in professional life.
Course Duration: 4 semesters full-time study, which corresponds to 120 ECTS credits
Overview of Costs: admission procedure: 125 CHF; matriculation fee: 390 CHF; student card: 50 CHF; diploma fee: 220 CHF; tuition fees, including various examination fees, services, and material costs: 1063 CHF per semester.
