The Michel Majerus Estate is pleased to announce the upcoming dialogue between Cornelius Tittel and Peter Pakesch hosted at the Michel Majerus Estate to coincide with the current exhibition majerus wool warhol….
Peter Pakesch—curator, museum director, foundation chairperson and long-time creative companion to Michel Majerus—will join editor-in-chief of art magazine BLAU and creative director at Die Welt Cornelius Tittel to share his first-hand experiences with the artist and his career. Pakesch and Majerus initially encountered one another at the 1994 exhibition gemälde at Berlin’s neugerriemschneider, and the two remained close until the artist’s untimely passing in 2002. The talk will explore their friendship and collaboration, and the ground-breaking exhibitions of Majerus’ work that Pakesch has curated over the years: His first institutional exhibition in 1996 at Kunsthalle Basel, the posthumous retrospective Michel Majerus. Installations 92–02 staged at Kunsthaus Graz in 2005 and the Michel Majerus Estate’s current exhibition showcasing works by Michel Majerus, Christopher Wool und Andy Warhol.
This oral history interview with Peter Pakesch is the inaugural event in a series of conversations with those who were mentors, friends and contemporaries of Michel Majerus.
The Michel Majerus Estate is currently hosting the second chapter of majerus wool warhol…, curated by Peter Pakesch. Divided into two interrelated parts, each with a distinct focus, the exhibition charts the rich artistic exchanges shared by Michel Majerus (1967–2002), Christopher Wool (b. 1955) and Andy Warhol (1928–1987). The first chapter majerus wool warhol…“cold beer” the “smudge tool” and other short stories brought together artworks that exemplify the creative and mutually influential friendship between Wool and Majerus, as well as their shared admiration of Warhol, whereas the second chapter entitled skulls and rorschachs takes as its points of departure Warhol’s use of the skull as a motif and Rorschach tests as a methodology—imagery and strategies that both Wool and Majerus developed and expanded upon in their own visionary practices.
