Publication of the German Pavilion at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale
“How did we live together?” is the question we are asking ourselves while looking back at the year 2020 with the serenity of 2038. 18 years ago, the 17th Architecture Biennale was supposed to open in Venice. At the time, curator Hashim Sarkis’ question “How will we live together?” seemed like a speculative grasp at a distant future. Reality taught us otherwise.
The pandemic alone was not the crisis. Climate change, social injustice, economic collapse and an endangered democracy—everything was colliding, at any given moment. The assertion to find new ways of living together turned into a necessity. And into a legendary Biennale that opened a year late in May 2021 in Venice.
While the German Pavilion in Venice remained closed in 2020, 2038 celebrated its premiere on the streets of the world and on 2038.xyz
