“Learning Photography”, the first exhibition in a series devoted to contemporary artistic practices, looks at the Frac Haute-Normandie’s photography collection from the perspective of learning and dissemination. This approach draws its inspiration from the “Teaching Photography” exhibition and symposium organised by the Wolfgang Museum in Essen in 2006, which brought together internationally renowned artists who also teach photography. Designed to expand upon this project, “Learning photography” sets out to explore the collection, not in terms of teaching here – for this is less pertinent to photography’s status in France than in Germany – but the ways in which it is learned, passed on and disseminated. To curate the project, Frac Haute-Normandie has invited eminent art historian Guillaume Le Gall, whose expert knowledge of photography provide a scientific and highly specialised focus on the collection, for greater insight into its implications.

To develop this line of enquiry into its collection, Frac Haute-Normandie has organised, in conjunction with  art historian Camille Pageard, a symposium entitled, “Teaching/Learning Photography – Can photography be taught as a subject?”. This significant two-day event is designed to bring together the different players in the European, national and local photography scene, to discuss controversial ideas on photography in terms of schools and dissemination. The symposium, organised with the support of the DRAC Haute-Normandie, will take place on 29th and 30th March 2012 in the Chamber of the Regional Council in Rouen.
