Young Polish artists on tour is a cycle presenting the works of young Polish artists in European capital cities, which in 2011 was held in Berlin and Madrid. The aim of the project is to promote young artists on the occasion of Polish Presidency of the European Union Council. The title emerged clearly, the objective of the exhibition is to promote young, Polish art scene.
The project is an extension of the Incubator program which has been implemented by the Łaźnia Centre for Contemporary Art for more than ten years, as a part of which we show what is the most interesting in the young art, showing both recipients and curators a huge potential of the young generation. Incubator is a program open to discussion, creating a platform for confrontation of young artists from Poland and abroad ones, the space for exchanging experiences.
Young Polish artists on tour has been an attempt to extend the discussion, objectify experiences and also some type of summary. For evaluation of the young Polish art, curators have been invited from two cities: Berlin and Madrid—the evaluation, consisting in selecting and choosing five artists out of several dozen portfolios sent to them. The selection process was an attempt to discover new aspects of Polish, young art, objectification through the look from outside. This resulted in three presentations; what face of the young Polish art do they reveal?
Pensart, the curator of Madrid part of the project set on diversity. The works of artists invited by them are on the one hand a formal experiment, on the other hand a commentary to reality. Problems characteristic for the contemporary world are reflected in them—gentrification processes, postmodern uncertainty, anxiety, a man and their everyday life. Sunshine Wong, a curator from Hong Kong living in Berlin, in a perverse way interpreted the guiding assumptions of the project. Polish artists in the Remarks The Stranger: Schillerpark Interventions, were “used” as a vehicle of analyses. The view from outside assumed in the project was interpreted twofold, as exploring the potential of the young Polish art and a tool for activation of modernist architecture’s semantic potential.
Dorothee Bienert in the exhibition Looking Into Neighbourship through selected works showed contemporary Poland, focusing on the problems of everyday life.
The young artists were chosen for several reasons. Their art, not embroiled in the struggle for freedom (creative activities of the 80s) and defining the limits of recovered freedom (the 90s) offers a “fresh” look, is a formal experiment. The works often come in a creative dialogue with Polish and the world art of the 70s, 80s, 90s, being a modern “reminder” of the historical trends. The artists highlight Polish advantages, speak with irony about national vices, allowing to familiarize them and understand. The distance from the border date 1989 removes a burden of historical heritage from them.
The project is subsidized as part of the programme of the Polish Minister of Culture, Polish Presidency 2011.
