In April the Board of the Founders of Fondazione Museion confirmed Letizia Ragaglia as director of the museum for the next four years. Curator at various institutions, Ragaglia (1969, I), who is specialised in museology and contemporary art, with a particular focus on art in public spaces, has been heading Museion since 2008. For Museion she has curated solo shows that include Monica Bonvicini, Gabriel Kuri, Isa Genzken, Andro Wekua, VALIE EXPORT and Carl Andre. She was a member of the Leone d’Oro jury at the 2011 Venice Biennale.

The 2012 season sees a new formula: each year the museum will host a guest curator who will stage a themed exhibition, and during the year the theme will be explored in panel discussions and related events.

The guest curator for 2012 is Rein Wolfs (1966, NL). Artistic director of the Kunsthalle Fridericianum in Kassel from January 2008, Wolfs held numerous prominent international appointments, including being the first director of the migros museum in Zurich (1996–2001). The museum and its new kinds of users will be the focus of “The New Public,” the themed exhibition that Wolfs will be curating for Museion (opening 14.09.2012).

From the public to the making of art: the guest curator show of 2013, entitled “Little Movements: Self-practice in Contemporary Art” will be devoted to artistic practice in the era of globalisation. It will be presented by art critic and curator Carol Yinghua Lu, (China, 1977), together with artist, curator Liu Ding (China, 1976). Lu was a member of the Leone d’Oro jury at the 2011 Venice Biennale, and in 2012 she will be one of the co-artistic directors of the Gwangju Biennale. Liu Ding has initiated Liu Ding’s Store, an ongoing conceptual art project since 2008. (www.liudingstore.com)

Exhibition programme 2012
The themed exhibition for 2012, “The New Public,” staged on the fourth floor of Museion, will be preceded by solo shows devoted to Claire Fontaine (Paris-based artist collective founded in 2004), curated by Letizia Ragaglia (opening 03.02.2012, on till 29.04.2012) and Pawel Althamer (1967, PL) in collaboration with the Fondazione Galleria Civica di Trento (opening 18.05.2012, on till 19.08.2012).

The second and third floors of the museum will play host to various exhibitions devoted to the collection. On until 16 September 2012 there will be the exhibition “The Collection in Action. Media works from Vito Acconci to Simon Starling”. Curated by Letizia Ragaglia and Frida Carazzato, the show will open on 25 November. This will be followed by “Museion meets migros” (working title) curated by Heike Munder and Letizia Ragaglia (opening 05.10.2012).

The project room, media façade and a new look for the museum
The 2012–2013 season also sees visible, physical changes in the museum venue. The designer Martino Gamper (1971, I) is to design a flexible structure to host round table discussions regarding exhibitions, and the museum’s events. On the ground floor, the west wing on the Talvera side will host a project room, a space for new or ad hoc projects created by young artists, with a special focus on homegrown talent. The artist Sonia Leimer (1977, I) will open the project room on 3 February, followed by Francesco Arena (1978, I), Gabriela Oberkofler (1975, I) and a special project by Luca Vitone (1964, I). There will also be a new project for the studio house, remodelled by designer Harry Thaler (1975, I).

The media façade will be operating on a permanent basis: 2012 will see a video programme curated by Frida Carazzato, with screenings of the artists Stefano Cagol (1969, I), Ingrid Hora (1976, I), Isola & Norzi (1976, I), Sonia Leimer (1977, I), Christian Niccoli (1976, I). Special project for the Piccolo Museion-Cubo Garutti by Paolo Riolzi (1967, I).
