The School of Art at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) comprises an international collective of artists, writers, educators, and scholars. Cultivated within a supportive community, student research explores, challenges, and examines contemporary and historical issues. Situated on the US/Mexico border, a vibrant site for artmaking, program specialties include Latin American and Latina/x art history, Latina/x identities, and borderlands-informed art practices.
MFA degree concentrations include 2D, 3D, and Design. In addition, we offer a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (MAIS) in Art History. The UTRGV School of Art is a bi-campus school which maintains facilities in both Edinburg and Brownsville. In Edinburg is a 73,000-square foot facility with studios and labs in graphic design, sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, printmaking, jewelry & metals, 3D printing, digital and film photography with a wet lab. In Brownsville is a 20,000 square foot indoor and outdoor space with unique 20-foot-high ceilings in all of their studios for optimum student art production in painting, ceramics, sculpture, photography (digital and film), printmaking, drawing, an iMac lab, and a 3000-square foot outdoor open area.

Graduate assistants will be awarded stipends and will be eligible for UTRGV in-state graduate tuition. Graduate assistants receiving any portion of a stipend must be enrolled at fulltime status (minimum of 9 graduate credit hours) and will need to maintain a 3.0 average for the assistantship to be renewed each semester.
In their personal statement, applicants should indicate that they wish to be considered for a graduate assistantship. Duties of assistantships will vary and take into account students’ strengths and areas of interest. Assistantships may involve work as a lab technician, assisting faculty in teaching courses, as instructor of record, or a research assistant, as determined by the School of Art.
All applicants must apply to the UTRGV Graduate College and fulfill all application requirements for the School of Art by March 1, 2021 in order to be considered for an assistantship.
