For summer 2010, the Kunstverein Hamburg has been invited by the Internationale Bauausstellung IBA Hamburg (International Building Exhibition Hamburg) to realize various projects in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg. There are three components to the project: The exhibition “Apocalypse Now – Art on the Climate Catastrophe”, curated by Raimar Stange, addresses aesthetic narratives on global warming and presents artistic positions that reflect the climate changes in a critical-discursive way. The project “Wilhelmsburg Art & Sports Club” by Jan Holtmann offers various activities in the field of art and sport. The project “Posturban – Art and Live after the City” by Corinna Koch and Roger Behrens reflects in different thematic workshops the changes of urban structures.
Published by Jan Holtmann, Maknete e.V., Raimar Stange and Florian Waldvogel. With texts by Roger Behrens, Vera Tollmann, Raimar Stange, Harald Welzer and photographs by Stefanie Becker. Graphic Design by Christoph Steinegger/Interkool. Threepart publication, partly German/English, color images. Published by Revolver. ISBN 978-3-86895-090-8
Kostis Velonis – How One Can think Freely in the Shadow of a Temple
The works of Kostis Velonis (*1968, lives in Athens) make use of a constructivist visual language with specific reference to the architecture of the 1920s. In keeping with the bricolage concept, his extensive installations serve as settings for smaller sculptures or objets trouvés. The focus is always on political utopias and the consequences of their failure. His sculptures seek to uncover the ideologies behind societal and political power structures in an effort to save utopian thinking from the reality of political practice. This new publication serves as a Popup-Artist’s book that collects the works presented in his solo exhibition at Kunstverein Hamburg in 2009. ISBN 978-3-94228-01-5
Published by Kunstverein Hamburg. Edition of 100, 8 pages, 6 color images. Graphic design by Christoph Steinegger/Interkool. Photographs by Fred Dott.
Tobias Zielony – Story / No Story
Tobias Zielony (*1973, lives in Berlin) has for many years been photographing young people in their given environments, mainly in the public space. He is attracted to the fringe areas of urban reality: the banlieues of French metropolises, the cities of Saxony-Anhalt that have gained a reputation as shrinking cities, or the desert city Trona outside Los Angeles. In contrast to classical documentations, his pictures exceed the boundaries of artistic work. He juxtaposes various genres, such as individual portraits, group pictures, detailed views, landscape and architectural pictures, and action photos, developing a form of narration similar to that found in films. This book provides an overview of the works Zielony produced between 2000 and 2008.
Published by Maik Schlüter, Florian Waldvogel and Jan Wenzel. With a conversation between Tobias Zielony and Christian Petzold. German/English, 216 pages, 140 color images. Published by Hatje Cantz. ISBN 978-3-7757-2284-1
Nina Canell – Evaporation Essays
In her fragile installations, the Swedish artist Nina Canell (*1979, lives and works in New York) transmutes man-made objects and ‘natural’ objets trouvés into experiments on changeability. Electrical appliances and neon tubes are combined with water and wood, with funnels, musical instruments, and broomsticks, which are taken out of their familiar utilitarian contexts and mounted into unhierarchical assemblies. The publication is the first extensive monograph and includes sculptures from the past three years.
Published by Kunstverein Hamburg and Neuer Aachener Kunstverein. With texts by Xander Karskens, Caomhín Mac Giolla Léith, Pádraic E. Moore, and Chris Sharp and a glossary by Melanie Bono and Annette Hans. German/English, 160 pages, full color. Published by Distanz Verlag. ISBN 978-3-942405-02-7
