The MUSE—Museum of Science Trento presents from the July 9 to September 26, 2021, in the historic exhibition venue of Palazzo delle Albere, Over Time, a three-channel video installation which stems from a project by Laura Pugno, developed and produced by a.titolo and curated by Andrea Lerda. The project is among the winners of the 9th edition of the Italian Council (2020), the program for the international promotion of Italian art of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture. The artwork will become part of the permanent collection of the MUSE.
Over Time investigates the relationship between human beings and the natural environment through a multifocal look at the theme of snow. A matter with a mysterious appeal, which seems to belong to an eternal time, snow has always been an attraction for explorers, scientists and artists; an ever-changing substance and at the same time solid memory of the world; a metamorphic element that underlines the transitory nature of our journey on Earth. Starting from the historical seduction that this element exercises on the human soul—its ability to generate beauty, emotions and visions—Over Time explores, updating them, the reasons for our emotional bond and our need to live, study and recreate snow in the time of climate emergencies and global warming.
The narration accompanied by music by the sound artist Magda Drozd, opens on three scenarios. In the first one, a human figure walking unmoved through a snowy forest, asks us about the concept of coexistence. In the second one, the images of the spray snow production process testify the possibility to artificially recreate memories, sensations and emotions related to snowy landscapes and Christmas scenarios and foresee a future in which snowflakes only survive in our memory. In the third, the snow scientist Michele Freppaz, engaged in a series of scientific analyses on the snows of Monte Rosa, near the Angelo Mosso Institute, plant the figure of scientist—emotionally involved and sensitive to sensory and experiential aspects—in an unprecedented light.
In Over Time, the alarming reference to a possible future without snow acts as a counterpoint to a feeling of empathy towards a fragile and silent universe, an expression of an affective ecology based on a renewed sensitivity to the concept of care and on a new ecophilia with the world.
The project is developed in collaboration with MUSE - Museum of Sciences of Trento, DISAFA, Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Food Sciences of the Università degli Studi di Torino, and eight other Italian and foreign art institutions, which will host the future events of the project starting in summer 2021: the Fondazione Zegna in Trivero Valdilana, Cittadellarte Fondazione Pistoletto in Biella, the Cultural Association AGIVERONA with the Università di Verona, OGR - Officine Grandi Riparazioni of Turin as part of the public program curated by the Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT and the Musée Gassendi / CAIRN Center d’Art of Digne-les-Bains (France), the non-profit institutions A Tale of a Tub in Rotterdam (Netherlands), SÜDPOL, Lucerne (Switzerland) and the Centre d’Art Contemporain of Geneva (Switzerland).
