Jimmie Durham, Stone rejected by the builder, 2004 Fondazione Ratti, Como.
On Sunday 17 October at the Whitechapel Gallery, FAR – Fondazione Antonio Ratti, directed by Mario Fortunato, will host a conversation between the cherokee artist Jimmie Durham and the art critic and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist.
During the event, organised in collaboration with Whitechapel Gallery and the Italian Cultural Institute, Jimmie Durham, visiting professor in July 2004 at FAR’s 10th Advanced Course in Visual Arts directed by Annie Ratti, will present his monograph and talk about his works.
The catalogue, edited by Charta and distributed by Art Book International, presents Durham’s experience with his 25 students from all around the world and illustrates the exhibition held at the end of the course.
The monograph is part of “Advanced Course in Visual Arts Publications” which bring together the contributions of all the visiting professors since the first course.
Among these: Joseph Kosuth (1996), John Armleder (1997), Allan Kaprow (1998), Hamish Fulton (1999), Haim Steinbach (2000), Ilya Kabakov (2001), Marina Abramovic (2002), Giulio Paolini (2003), Richard Nonas (2004).
On this occasion the video “Stone rejected by the builder” shot during the Advanced Course in Visual Arts in Como by Maria Thereza Alvez e Jimmie Durham, will be screened for the first time
Jimmie Durham (Arkansas, USA, 1940) is a poet, writer and visual artist. He was an active member of the American Indian Movement in the 70s. His sculptures, performances and installations, mostly created using waste material, express an ironical attack against the persistent colonial structure on which western culture is based.
Among the main international exhibitions he took part to are Documenta, Kassel, Biennale di Venezia, Sidney Biennial and Withney Biennial.
Hans Ulrich Obrist (Zurich, Switzerland, 1968) is one of the most vital and innovative curators of the international artistic scene. He works at the Musee de la Ville de Paris and collaborates as external curator with artistic institutions around the world.
The next visiting professor of 2005 Advanced Course in Visual Arts will be Alfredo Jaar
