Wasmuth, Corinne, Pathfinder, 2002, oil on wood, 243 x 324 cm.
The Deutscher Kuenstlerbund is pleased to present Corinne Wasmuht (1964), an outstanding emerging artist in Germany. Raised in Argentina, Wasmuht then studied at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf where she began developing her own approach to the medium of painting.
She is now internationally known for her large scale, multi-layered works. The works are created through a long process of collecting and composing of found images. The composite image created from the source material, is re-inscribed through painting, normally to a wooden surface.
Wasmuhts’ work produces an illusory perspectival space, yet as one gets closer to the surface, inherent, meticulous details are revealed to the viewer.
For the project space of the Deutscher Kuenstlerbund, Wasmuht has created a temporary painting of an imaginary room directly on a 13 X 3m wall. This is the first solo show of Corinne Wasmuht in Berlin.
The Deutscher Kuenstlerbund is one of the oldest artists’ associations in Europe. The association was founded in 1903 by the art patron Harry Count Kessler, Max Liebermann, Max Slevogt and others to establish a platform for the avantgarde. After its dissolution by the Nazis in 1936, the re-establishment of the Kuenstlerbund took place in Berlin in 1951. The list of members includes well known artists such as Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel, Ida Kerkovius, Markus Lupertz and Paul Klee. At present more than 500 artists such as Katharina Fritsch, Thomas Locher, Carsten Nicolai and Otto Piene are representing a spectrum of generations of German artists.
Since 2001, the Kuenstlerbund has a permanent project space in Berlin-Mitte.
