The London Consortium PhD programme is once again joining forces with Tate Modern to present a summer school for 2003. This three week programme focuses on three inter-related themes: Imaging Contemporary London, Down & Dirty in London, and Behind Closed Doors London. Participants explore cutting-edge contemporary culture in London through daily lectures with practitioners in the fields of art, architecture, fashion and music. These are combined with afternoon site visits including artists studios, architect and fashion designers ateliers, private and public archives, commercial and public galleries, and auction house backrooms. Evening events include gallery openings and walking tours. The programme is ideal for artists and curators or anyone with a serious interest in the arts.
Guest speakers for 2003 include: Marina Warner, Patrick Keiller, David Adjaye, Shelley Fox, Richard Wentworth, Ian Sinclair, Paul Hirst, Mark Cousins, James Putnam, Mel Gooding & Bill Furlong, Naomi Salaman, Mike Smith, Brandon LaBelle, Michael Landy and Hadrian Pigott.
Participating institutions include The British Museum, the Lux archive and Lux-on-line, The Imperial War Museum, Christies, Stoke Newington Cemetery, Tate Modern, and Tate Britain.
Comments from 2002 participants:
Imaging Contemporary London was incredible, a real eye opener to the London arts scene.
Behind Closed Doors granted us privileged access to museums and archives.
Down and Dirty was thought provoking and a fantastic addition to my experience. I imagine this sort of exceptional topic is exactly what makes the London Consortium a progressive academic programme.
