Z33 presents BC architects & studies & materials: Same Same but Different. In this exhibition, BC presents sustainable alternatives to current forms of extraction in architecture.
BC is a hybrid practice, designing and undertaking “acts of building” toward systemic change in the construction sector. They strive for bioregional, low-tech, circular, beautiful and inclusive designs. Same Same but Different focuses on three of BC’s architectural projects that exemplify eco-friendly techniques of extraction: geo-sourcing, urban sourcing and bio-sourcing.
In ancient times, old buildings served as quarry for new ones. Today, BC applies these centuries-old principles of reuse or circular construction in an effort to reform the field of architecture. At the same time, they pioneer the development of new, environmentally responsible building materials. This involves a great deal of sampling and prototyping in order to make practical applications possible. The exhibition at Z33 foregrounds this process through countless samples, mock-ups and architectural models.
The last space of the exhibition is curated by students of the postgraduate course Building Beyond Borders at the University of Hasselt. They redefine the meaning of extraction in architecture through the ‘urban harvesting’ of waste streams and local biological and geological resources. Their presentation is accompanied by a public program that will run throughout the duration of the exhibition.
