With FALSE SPRING, 701 e.V. is presenting a cooperation project with students of Mischa Kuball’s “urban stage ff.” seminar at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne.
Until its demolition 23 artists will be given a “carte blanche” to present their works in the “Apollo-Hochhaus” located at Königsallee 106, an office building built in 1967 where the magnificent Apollo-Theatre once stood.
The rather inconspicuous skyscraper with its glass façade, height of 69 meters and 18 floors, will become an exciting stage for a wide variety of artistic interventions for a few weeks. The time-based and cross-media works not only reflect the eventful history of the site, but also negotiate—in dialogue with the ever-visible surrounding city—related social processes and questions of our present.
Based on the title of the exhibition FALSE SPRING, the artists from different backgrounds particularly pose questions about environment-related, consumer-society themes, both on a conceptual and material level. In their processes of developing ideas, they refer to personal associations with nature, desire or aversion.
The exhibition takes place on more than 2,500 square meters in the foyer and first floor. The exhibited works are being developed especially for this location.
“(…) the work with students from the seminar ‘urban stage’ follows the deep interest in dealing with urban voids and spaces outside the KHM, which pose questions about their socio-political use and cultural significance as well as their inscription in urban history!” —Mischa Kuball
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue including an essay by Nana Tazuke, Museum Ludwig Cologne.
