Since its initiation in 2019, Onassis AiR grounds its mission in the ongoing support of artistic research and practice. Four years later, from its new home in the lively neighborhood of Neos Kosmos, Οnassis AiR has become a meeting point for cross-disciplinary thinking and experimentation between local and international artists and researchers. We remain committed to cultivating a common ground between people with mixed perspectives, from different geographies and creative practices. For us, this ground begins in Athens—with its thriving communities, its present and past histories and ever-changing landscape—and radiates outward to our peripheries and vernacular knowledge produced outside of the metropolitan centers, in dialogue with the wider Balkan and Mediterranean region and other parts of the world.
In fall 2022, a dedicated group of past participants came together to imagine how Onassis AiR could grow and welcome new participants, while continuing to support the existing community. As a result of this process, in February 2023, we announced a new Open Call that emerged from our urge to remain attuned to the evolving needs of our participants and stay relevant to the larger discussions that are happening worldwide and concern our societies today. The Tailor-made Residencies is an open-ended program offering time and space, tailored to the individual research needs of the participants. It is addressed to anyone interested in engaging with the locale of Athens and is yearning for space, focused time, and stimulating conversations that can help to kick-off, further develop, or finalize a project.
After receiving almost 2000 applications, we have invited 24 Fellows from diverse artistic fields and disciplines to connect, learn from one another, and collectively enrich their research or practice. Joining the Onassis AiR Fellows—who were selected to take part in this residency program via our Open Call—are artists awarded via our International Networks in partnership with other institutions or commissioned by Onassis Culture to continue their research journeys and develop new work unimpeded.
Each Fellow is invited to use the Onassis AiR space and program to delve deeper into their research or project without the expectation of presenting a final work. Rather, the participants are encouraged to engage with the Onassis AiR Community through an offering, in the form of a workshop, an in-progress presentation, a lecture or screening, or any other format they wish to propose. Throughout the program’s duration, our Fellows are provided with ample resources, including a research fee, workspace, housing, travel costs, and a dedicated research budget. Additionally, Onassis AiR offers a comprehensive support system through mentoring sessions, presentations, peer-to-peer feedback, site visits to local art spaces and institutions, and opportunities to meet and connect with local artists and arts professionals.
