The Ministry for Cultural and Environmental Heritage (today the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism) was established by Giovanni Spadolini in 1974 to create a specially constituted Ministry for the management of cultural heritage and the environment, in order to ensure the organic protection of the interests of extreme relevance on the domestic and national level. They oversee all national museums, monuments, archives, cultural heritage work, and more.
