Join us at Bar Laika for the 22nd edition of Satellite, featuring live music performances by Camilo Ángeles and Joanna Mattrey. The duo started their collaboration in 2021 and have two upcoming albums, one that will be released on Notice Recordings this year and another one that will be released on Relative Pitch in 2024. The core of their collaboration is to open up a space for expressing their identities and aesthetic visions through different sound narratives and discourses.

Camilo Ángeles is a flutist, composer, sound artist, researcher, music curator, and educator born in Arequipa, Peru and based in Mexico City. He is interested in the hybridization of aesthetics, not conforming to genres, the search for a unique aesthetic vision through a deconstructed approach to his instrument and musical language, and the sonorous exploration of the flute. His music consists of explosive sounds created with different extended techniques, preparations of the flute, microtonal textures, electronic processing, and hyper amplification of the flute. In his music, improvisation and composition are procedures used for the same purpose: the construction of a particular identity and space for expression. Ángeles co-directs the record label TVL REC with Violeta García and Carlos Quebrada. Between 2018-2021, he curated the Lima Jazz Festival. He has received awards and scholarships from the National Fund for the Arts of Argentina, participated in the OMI International Arts Center Residency, and received the Science Art and Technology Award from the Museum of Contemporary Art of Lima, Peru. Apart from working as a composer and producer making music for film, dance, and theater works, he currently composes and directs the music for his ensemble Nicotina es Primavera, a sextet with whom he has published two albums, with another one coming up this year. He has collaborated with artists such as Tyshawn Sorey, Brandon Seabrook, Chris Pitsiokos, Kaja Draksler, Wade Matthews, Elias Stemesseder, William Winant, Paula Shocron, Matiss Cudars, Tony Malaby, Anaïs Maviel, Cara Stacey, Ben Bennett, Andrew Drury, Sales de Baño, Violeta Garcia, Carlos Quebrada, Ido Bukelman, Samuel Hall, Javier Bustos, Aviva Endean, Chatori Shimizu, Susana Baca, Mono Fontana, Sam Weinberg, Henry Fraser, Joanna Mattrey, Gabby Fluke-mogul, and many others.

Joanna Mattrey is a violist working in free improvisation, new music, and classical music. She uses extended techniques, modern compositional approaches, and electronic alterations to challenge the conventions of the viola. Mattrey creates an embodied performance practice centered on ceremony and ritual. Recent and upcoming releases include Soulcaster (Notice Recordings, 2023); Strider (Dear Life Recs, 2023); Oracle (Relative Pitch Records, 2022); and Dirge (Dear Life Recs, 2021). Mattrey is currently an artist-in-residence at Roulette Intermedium and a former resident at Issue Project Room, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Wild Project, and MoMa PS1. Mattrey has performed with artists such as Tyshawn Sorey, Henry Threadgill, Marc Ribot, John Zorn, Mary Halvorson, Billy Martin, Elliott Sharpe, Miya Masaoka, and the International Contemporary Ensemble.

Satellite is a monthly experimental music series curated by Sanna Almajedi.
