Established in 2005, CHELSEA space is a public exhibiting space where invited art and design professionals are encouraged to work on experimental curatorial projects. The programme is international and interdisciplinary, covering art, design and popular culture with an emphasis on curatorial experimentation, the exposure of process and ideas, re-readings of artworks, collections and archives and their re-presentation for contemporary audiences.

CHELSEA space’s most dominant architectural feature is its large plate glass window, that exposes the space to a continuous audience, allowing for viewers to observe and engage with all aspects of exhibition making and display. Sited within the Millbank campus of Chelsea College of Arts, the ethos of CHELSEA space is welcoming — a meeting place where informal social networks can develop between students, practitioners and a wide public audience.

2014 saw the introduction of the Exhibition Studio Workshop at CHELSEA space, which is the practice-based strand of the new MA Curating and Collections postgraduate taught course—giving students the opportunity to work within the professional gallery environment. Through this, students engage with works and objects from the CHELSEA space, Chelsea College of Arts Library and Special Collections, in addition to the established exhibition programme.
