The Sea Ranch is a planned unincorporated community on the northern Sonoma County coast begun in 1964-65. Planned to coexist harmoniously with its distinctive landscape by Lawrence Halprin and a team of young architects that included Charles W. Moore, Sea Ranch is noted for its distinctive architecture. Buildings draw on local agricultural types for inspiration and consist primarily of simple timber-frame structures clad in wooden siding or shingles. This hybrid of modern and vernacular architecture is commonly referred to as “Sea Ranch style,” also known as the “third Bay Area tradition.”
