Yale Center for British Art

Founded by philanthropist Paul Mellon (Yale College, Class of 1929), the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) holds the largest and most comprehensive collection of British art outside the United Kingdom. The museum building, designed by iconic modernist architect Louis I. Kahn (1901–1974), opened to the public in 1977.

The YCBA’s collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, watercolors, rare books, and manuscripts share stories of British art and culture in a global context from the medieval period through the present. Highlights include historic works by John Constable, Thomas Gainsborough, Angelica Kauffman, Joshua Reynolds, George Stubbs, and J. M. W. Turner, as well as objects by major artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, including Francis Bacon, Cecily Brown, Gwen John, Henry Moore, and Yinka Shonibare.
