Housed in the Joann Cole Mitte and Sabinal buildings, five diverse programs cross-pollinate, compelling students in the School of Art and Design to search for deeper connections between disciplines. Our students invest holistically in their own education, providing a model for other regional and national art and design programs. Supporting this endeavor are the more than 80 diverse faculty members dedicated to fostering conceptual and technical abilities necessary for artistic expression and visual communications.

The School of Art and Design offers both a BFA and an MFA in Communication Design. The core processes of design: research, conceptual planning, and realization are deepened and brought to bear on contemporary design problems local to global in scope.

At Texas State University we believe art and design should be experienced first-hand. The University Galleries are home to an ambitious yearly program of exhibitions featuring internationally renowned artists as well as faculty and student work. Every Summer, two faculty members, one studio and one art history, lead a study-abroad trip to Florence, Italy. Bearing witness to the most compelling contemporary art as well as centuries of artistic heritage profoundly changes students’ personal relationship to art and design.
