Moderna galerija (MG+MSUM) is the Slovene national museum of modern and contemporary art. It consists of two venues, The Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova. As a museum of modern art, it explores and presents the tradition of Slovene 20th century art, including avantgarde and partisan art. It holds the national collection spanning the time from Impressionism to the early 1990. The core of the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova is the Arteast 2000+, a pioneering collection of Eastern European art.
The institutional exhibition policy draws on the specific cultural, historical and geopolitical circumstances in which it operates, as well as on the new reality of the globalised society. It sees its role as an intermediary between the national and the international, the local and the global. Its specific position enables it to function as a bridge between various geopolitical and cultural regions in Europe (East–West, North–South) as well as between Europe and “non-Europe.”
