Based in the heart of one of Europe’s fastest growing digital cities, Modal is a new digital gallery that will showcase artists working at the forefront of creative technology.

Featuring three major exhibitions a year by local and international artists, alongside its exhibition programme, Modal will also have a rich and provocative line-up of talks, conferences and performances.

Modal combines a dynamic production centre with multiple styles of exhibition space to facilitate innovative work in traditional and emerging art forms. Exhibiting artists will be supported by advanced labs for extended reality, video making, sound art and design, motion capture and more.

Modal is located within the School of Digital Arts at Manchester Metropolitan University – a £35M investment to drive the next generation of creative practitioners studying at the intersection of storytelling, technology and innovation.

Modal's inaugural exhibitions Slip.Stream.Slip (Parts 1 and 2) focuses on game engine culture and the shift toward gamification as a model for understanding our lived experiences. The exhibition explores the tensions and contested spaces that open up when the micro politics of everyday living meet complex, simulated worlds. Part 2 of the exhibition runs from 13 October – 16 December 2022, Monday – Friday, 12 – 5pm at Modal at the School of Digital Arts (SODA) in Manchester.

Featured artists: Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, Auriea Harvey, Cécile B. Evans, Jakob Kudsk Steensen, Jenna Sutela, Joshua Citarella, Juan Cortés, Lu Yang, Rachel Maclean, Dara Birnbaum, Joseph DeLappe, Mishka Henner, Pierre Huyghe, Trevor Paglen, Quayola, Hito Steyerl, and a selection of DIS artists.
