Kunstverein München is one of the oldest and, with over 1,400 members, largest institutions of its kind. With its spaces located in the historical arcades of the Hofgarten, it has not only been an integral part of Munich’s art scene since its founding in 1823, but has also gained international recognition as an innovative and controversial platform for contemporary art.

The Kunstverein is not only a space for the production and presentation of contemporary art but also for social exchange where a critical awareness of “contemporaneity” can develop. It is precisely this central notion of a vital exchange on uncertain cultural terrain that defines the Kunstverein’s work as an indispensable force in the international network of cultural institutions. Consequently, the institution is not a framework in which a single narrative is woven, but rather a container that can hold a multitude of stories. It is therefore not only important to close historical gaps, but also to alter the structures in which work is produced, documented, and archived in order to allow for more porous narratives to emerge.

Recent exhibitions at Kunstverein München include Diamond Stingily: Wall Sits (2019), Pati Hill: Something other than either, the group exhibition Not Working – Artistic production and matters of class (both 2020), Patricia L. Boyd: Hold, Bea Schlingelhoff: No River to Cross (both 2021), Tony Cokes: Fragments, or just Moments (in collaboration with Haus der Kunst München), and Pippa Garner: Act Like You Know Me (both 2022).
